Battleground Round-Up

Battleground Round-Up -- AFSCME members and our allies have been busy fighting in state capitals across the country:

ALEC Exposed

This past year alone has seen hundreds of ALEC bills introduced on the floors of nearly every state legislative body. The recent spate of anti-union legislation based on ALEC model bills include: right-to-work-for less legislation, attacks on collective bargaining, and paycheck deception measures. Paycheck deception was introduced in 15 states, and passed in Alabama and Arizona, while right-to-work-for-less has so far been blocked in all 18 states where it was introduced.

ALEC Exposed

ALEC Exposed -- The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a secretive organization made up of 2,000 conservative state legislators and 300 big corporations, has been the driving force behind most of the extreme, anti-worker legislation sprouting up in state capitols across the nation. Just this month, Ohio-based activist Aliya Ruhman leaked approximately 800 "model bills" previously available only to ALEC members at the website www.alecexposed.org.

Wisconsin Recall Update

Tuesday, State Senator Dave Hansen, one of the courageous "Wisconsin 14," was overwhelmingly elected to continue serving his Green Bay-based district with 66 percent of the vote. The working families of northeastern Wisconsin sent a clear message of support for those who stand against Governor Scott Walker and his anti-worker policies. Hansen's win provides clear momentum as We Are Wisconsin heads into the August 9 recall elections against the six GOP Senators who stood with Walker against working families.
